What should you look for in a radiologist when getting a mammogram?

Certified radiologists are specialized medical doctors, focused on diagnosing and treating medical conditions using x-ray and other image-producing technologies.

When looking for the best mammogram doctors, women should seek board-certified experts who specialize in breast imaging. Studies have shown that radiologists who are sub-specialized and experienced in breast imaging provide the most accurate readings.

At PURE Mammography on Long Island, we are committed to fighting breast cancer through early and accurate detection. Our facility offers the most advanced technology along with highly skilled and experienced mammography doctors. All mammograms are interpreted by board-certified radiologists who are sub-specialists in breast imaging.

What should you look for in a mammography facility?

You should have mammograms performed only at a facility accredited by the American College of Radiology (ACR) — quality is critical. ACR guidelines set standards for the mammogram doctors who read the images, technicians, reports, and mammography machines. Accreditation by the ACR means that the radiologists and technicians are specially trained and certified in mammography and that the equipment meets standards and is inspected regularly. You should also choose a center-based upon the reputation of its radiologists and the quality of its equipment.

There are three points of consideration a woman may make when choosing where to have her mammograms performed.

Expertise

When possible, choose a facility that is dedicated to breast imaging only. A dedicated facility should have the latest technology, as well as ample experience obtained by performing many mammograms each day.

When possible, visit the same mammogram facility. New patients to PURE Mammography can receive assistance obtaining previous records so that we have the most accurate history of breast screenings to build a strong patient record.

Insurance

According to the Affordable Care Act, all insurance plans, including Medicare and Medicaid, must cover yearly mammogram screenings, beginning at age 40.

Insured patients have no out-of-pocket expenses at PURE Mammography.

Uninsured women can obtain low-cost mammograms at our facility.

At PURE Mammography, patients are not required to have a prescription or doctor’s referral to have their screening. Our team sends a copy of y our report to your health care provider and also provides you with a concise explanation of your mammogram results.

Comfort

Mammograms have a reputation for being uncomfortable. This perception of the screening may be dramatically inaccurate. As technology has improved, so has comfort. Breast compression may always be slightly uncomfortable but, because less compression is necessary these days, most patients are surprised at how tolerable and quick their mammogram is.

In addition to utilizing the best available technologies, our facility also prioritizes comfort in other ways. Our office environment is more like a spa than a clinic. Patients receive warm robes to wear as they await their appointment in our comfortable lounge area. While waiting, they may enjoy snacks and gourmet beverages as soothing music plays in the background. Our exam rooms are also spa-like, equipped with soothing video and sound that transforms the space into a beautiful setting, such as a rainforest, garden, or beach.

PURE Mammography also offers flexible, extended hours. Why? Because we know that life is busy. We also know that a relaxed patient is a more comfortable patient. With our scheduling flexibility, you can visit us at a time when you will not feel rushed. You can fit your mammogram into your daily routine.

What is the importance of Radiology?

The United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has stated that breast cancer is the second most common cancer among women in the United States. The American Cancer Society states that a woman has a 1 in 8 chance of developing breast cancer at some point in her lifetime. The Society has also stated that “Since 2007, breast cancer death rates have been steady in women younger than 50, but have continued to decrease in older women. From 2013 to 2018, the death rate decreased by 1% per year. These decreases are believed to be the result of finding breast cancer earlier through screening and increased awareness, as well as better treatments.”

The fact that breast cancer rates have risen by 0.5% per year in recent years, coupled with the fact that breast cancer death rates have decreased, informs us that breast cancer screenings remain a critical aspect of well-woman care. PURE Mammography is pleased to serve the women of Long Island with proven screening technologies.

Mammogram Technology

Mammogram screenings are the best resource available for the early detection of breast abnormalities that may indicate breast cancer. A mammogram is essentially an x-ray of the breasts. During the test, the patient stands in front of the mammogram machine. The technician places one breast between two plastic plates. The plates come together and gently compress breast tissue. Two or more x-rays are taken of each breast.

Standard mammography has been the norm for decades. Recently, many facilities have begun to use breast tomosynthesis or 3D mammography. This multidimensional technology captures breast tissue at many different angles. These angles are put together to build a three-dimensional image. We are proud to offer 3D mammograms in our spa-like facility in Lake Grove.

Breast Ultrasound

Ultrasound technology creates images of tissues and internal organs using sound waves. Breast ultrasounds may be an alternative to mammography in some cases or may be necessary as a follow-up to an abnormal mammogram to obtain more detailed information about a mass. During a breast ultrasound, the technician places a small probe against the skin. The probe delivers high-frequency sound waves through tissue. These waves bounce off tissue as echo waves, which are converted into images.

What is the importance of Mammograms?

Mammography is the only screening proven to reduce breast cancer deaths. This screening can detect cancerous cells early before symptoms occur. It is then when breast cancer is most responsive to treatments. Early breast cancer detection improves the chances of survival and may also prevent the need for more extensive treatment.

In a Swedish study involving more than 50,000 breast cancer patients, researchers concluded that those who partook in a breast cancer screening were 60% less likely to die of the disease in the 10 years following diagnosis. The risk of death in 20 years was 47% lower thanks to appropriate breast cancer screening.

A mammogram is the first line of defense against breast cancer mortality. This examination is done to evaluate the cause of symptoms such as pain, a lump, or nipple discharge. However, the vast majority of mammograms performed are for women without breast complaints. Mammography does not diagnose breast cancer. It is an x-ray examination of breast tissue that can detect abnormalities. This technology has evolved to require less radiation and achieve higher quality images than were available previously.
