Happy Breast Cancer Awareness Month!
It’s October. Little pink bows are everywhere you look. NFL players wear pink socks and gloves. People in hot pink shirts and headscarves are walking in cities across America. What's going on? It’s Breast Cancer Awareness Month, a worldwide campaign to raise awareness of a disease that affects one out of every eight women.
What Is Breast Cancer Awareness Month?
Every October, various breast cancer charities use pink ribbons to symbolize breast cancer awareness. It’s a time to raise awareness with survivor walks, fun events, and to ask for donations to raise money for breast cancer research.
How Can I Help Celebrate?
There are many ways to become involved in the fight to cure breast cancer. You can:
- Share breast cancer awareness posts on social media
- Make a donation to a reputable cancer charity
- Share your breast cancer survivor story or those of your loved ones
- Host a virtual fundraiser
- Join a breast cancer awareness walk or fun run
- Learn how to do a self-exam of your breasts
- Spread the word about mammograms and schedule one for yourself
Why Is Breast Cancer Awareness So Important?
According to the National Breast Cancer Foundation, about 252,710 women are diagnosed with breast cancer in the U.S. each year. Of those, 40,500 die of the disease. Breaking it down, that means one woman gets a breast cancer diagnosis every two minutes. Every 13 minutes, someone dies of the disease.
Breast Cancer Awareness Month was created to get the word out about how pervasive this disease is and to find a cure. One in eight women will get breast cancer at some point in her lifetime. A woman is more likely to get breast cancer than any other kind of cancer, and only lung cancer claims more lives annually. With an estimated 3.3 million breast cancer survivors in the U.S., those survivors and their loved ones come together in October (and all year round) to donate funds for research, promote the importance of breast cancer education, and give support to women currently battling the disease.
Get a Mammogram to Celebrate Breast Cancer Awareness Month
October is the perfect time to celebrate Breast Cancer Awareness Month by getting an annual mammogram. This simple x-ray is the single most effective tool in the early detection of breast cancer. Mammograms are safe, easy, and are covered by most insurance plans. Mammograms detect tiny abnormalities before you or your doctor can feel them, helping diagnose, and treat breast cancer early. Early detection leads to less invasive treatment options and better overall outcomes.
