What Can a Pelvic Ultrasound Detect?

An ultrasound is a procedure that uses sound waves to produce images of the area being scanned. The sound waves are emitted through a transducer and send images to a screen. A pelvic ultrasound can provide images of a woman’s organs, including the uterus, fallopian tubes, cervix, and ovaries. There are two ways to perform a pelvic ultrasound. An abdominal ultrasound is performed by placing a small amount of conductive gel on the abdomen and moving the transducer over the abdomen to obtain images. A vaginal ultrasound uses a wand-like transducer inserted into the vagina. While pelvic ultrasounds are common during pregnancy, they are used to detect several other medical issues.

When Will My Doctor Order a Pelvic Ultrasound?

A pelvic ultrasound, both vaginal and abdominal, are common during pregnancy to confirm implantation and to assess the health and growth of the fetus. However, if you are experiencing difficulty becoming pregnant or have unexplained pain in your abdomen or issues with your reproductive health, your OB/Gyn may order an ultrasound to assess the condition, position, and health of your uterus and cervix. An ultrasound can also be used to help confirm a diagnosis of polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS). It can also be used to ensure the placement of an IUD or identify tumors and growths within the uterus.

Are There Any Risks from an Ultrasound?

Ultrasounds are non-invasive and use no radiation, so a pelvic ultrasound is a very safe procedure that can provide your OB/Gyn with detailed information about your reproductive health that can help him or her determine a diagnosis, develop a treatment plan, and resolve any pain you might be experiencing. You are able to resume normal activity immediately after an ultrasound, and there is nothing special you must do to prepare for it other than drink water prior to the exam to ensure your bladder is full enough to be out of the way of seeing the organs.
