What Makes a 3D Mammogram Different?

young female patientAre you proactive about your health by receiving yearly mammograms? If so, you should know that not all mammogram centers are equipped with the newest technology that produces clearer images and dramatically slashes the number of false positive results. That technology is 3D mammography, and you owe it to yourself to get your yearly screening in a facility that specializes in it.

What is a 3D mammogram?

A 3D mammogram, or breast tomosynthesis, was approved in 2011 by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). It’s similar to traditional mammography in that it uses x-rays to capture images of breast tissue to screen for abnormalities that may be breast cancer. However, 3D imaging records many more images of breast tissue that are clearer and easier for a radiologist to study.

During a 3D mammogram, multiple images of breast tissue are recorded from several different angles. These images are then compiled into highly detailed individual slides similar to pages in book, which a radiologist can study one at a time to discover any notable abnormalities.

What is the difference between a traditional mammogram and a 3D mammogram?

During a traditional mammogram, x-rays capture only two images of a breast. One image is taken from the side while the other is taken from the top. With a 3D mammogram, multiple images are taken from a variety of angles to form a digital 3D picture. The radiologist who interprets the images has the advantage of viewing the images in one-millimeter slices to get the most accurate view of any abnormalities. With traditional images, the radiologist is limited to only two views of the breast and must look through the entire thickness of the breast.

Although a radiologist will notice a vast difference in the number and quality of images provided by 3D mammograms, a patient won’t notice much difference between the two tests. The x-ray tube for a 3D image sweeps across the breast tissue in an arc and takes only a few seconds longer to record the image than during a traditional x-ray.

What are the benefits of a 3D mammogram?

Studies show that 3D mammograms are more effective for women who have dense breast tissue and those with an increased cancer risk due to family history or other health factors. With multiples “slices” of images to study and their sharper quality, radiologists can better interpret mammogram results, reducing unnecessary and costly follow-up testing. In fact, studies show that 3D mammograms reduce false positive results by up to 40 percent and are more effective in detecting invasive breast cancer earlier.
